Yesterday we took a day trip to the Harmony and Colesville areas. We saw all sorts of really neat Church history sites. But first, we stopped in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Daddy wanted to see the setting for one of his favorite TV shows, "The Office." This building appears in the show's opening credits:
This is the site of Joseph and Emma Smith's home in Harmony, Pennsylvania. Nearby is the Aaronic Priesthood Restoration Monument. Most of the Book of Mormon was translated here in Harmony:
This picture was taken on the Isaac and Elizabeth Hale farm. Right now, it's just a great big field, but we learned from the missionaries that the Church may develop this site in the near future. Archaeologists recently excavated the area, and we took a lot of really neat pictures of the excavation site:
This picture was taken at the McKune Cemetery, near the Aaronic Priesthood Restoration Monument. This is the grave of Joseph and Emma's first son, Alvin. Emma's parents are also buried nearby:
Here I am with Daddy and Grandpa Baker, wading the Susquehanna River. This is the section of the river that adjoins Joseph and Emma's thirteen acres in Harmony. It was probably very near here that the Aaronic Priesthood was restored to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery by John the Baptist:
This is a picture of the original Joseph Knight home in Colesville. (The part of the house with the chimney is original; the other two sections are add-ons.) The well pictured here was dug by Joseph Smith, Jr., and his father (although the part above ground is not original). The first branch of the Church was organized here in Colesville, and many baptisms were performed on this property in the pond:
This is the original Josiah Stowell home. Josiah Stowell was an employer of Joseph Smith. It was here in this home that Emma and Joseph spent their honeymoon. The Nauvoo Mansion House was also modeled after this home:
Joseph and Emma were married in South Bainbridge, New York, in the home of Justice of the Peace Zechariah Tarbell. The house is no longer standing, but here is a marker that the state put up. (Notice that they misspelled Emma's name. Oops.)
