Some of the Highlights of the Last Few Days
At the Angel Moroni Monument on the Hill Cumorah:
This lake-stone house was built on the Martin Harris farm after Martin's home burned down in 1849. Joseph Smith worked in the fields at the Martin Harris farm for fifty cents a day. Martin Harris mortgaged his farm to finance the printing of the Book of Mormon:
This is the log home in Palmyra, where the Smith family was living when Joseph had his First Vision. It is also where the Angel Moroni appeared to Joseph and told him about the Book of Mormon:
This church building is located in Fayette and was dedicated by President Kimball during a special general conference in 1980 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the founding of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was built to resemble what the church would have looked like had it been built in 1830:
This picture was taken at the Whitmer home, where the Church was organized on April 6, 1830. It is also where the translation of the Book of Mormon was completed, and it was near here that the Three Witnesses received their witness of the Book of Mormon. Some of the Joseph Smith Translation of the Bible also occurred here:
This is a picture of Taughannock Falls, the highest falls in the Northeastern United States. The falls are 215 feet high. The falls are located in Trumansburg, where W. W. Phelps was converted to the Church:
This is a picture of Lock 29 of the Erie Canal. The Erie Canal played an important role in the Restoration, as the original canal made it possible for E. B. Grandin to transport a new Smith press to Palmyra. The Smith press was the latest in printing technology, and facilitated the publication of the Book of Mormon:
This picture was taken at the original Palmyra Cemetery. The monument marks the spot where Alvin Smith (Joseph's oldest brother) was buried, shortly after the Angel Moroni appeared to Joseph for the first time. Alvin's death really impacted the Smith family. The Unitarian minister said that Alvin would be damned because he hadn't been baptized. This false doctrine resulted in many important clarifying revelations in future years--about the postmortal life and vicarious ordinances:
P.S. I'm not in any of these pictures because I've been hanging out with Grandma Baker while Mom and Dad go out to see the sites with Grandpa Baker.
